How do I add UTM parameters to a short link?

Last updated on September 20, 2026

UTM parameters are tags added to a destination URL that can help analytics tools identify where visitors came from and which campaign brought them to your website.

You can use UTM parameters with links you shorten through Azaz.

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are added to the end of a URL as query parameters.

A URL with UTM parameters might look like this:

https://example.com/page?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer

When someone visits this URL, a compatible analytics system on the destination website may use those parameters to identify the campaign or traffic source.

Common UTM parameters

  • utm_source — identifies the traffic source, such as google, instagram, or newsletter.
  • utm_medium — identifies the marketing medium, such as social, email, or cpc.
  • utm_campaign — identifies the campaign name.
  • utm_term — can be used for a keyword or other campaign information when appropriate.
  • utm_content — can help distinguish different links, advertisements, buttons, or creative versions within the same campaign.

Add UTM parameters before shortening your URL

One simple method is to add the UTM parameters directly to your destination URL before creating the Azaz short link.

For example, start with:

https://example.com/product

Then add your campaign parameters:

https://example.com/product?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new_product

You can then paste the complete URL into the Azaz URL Shortener and create your short link.

Add parameters from your Azaz account

If you are signed in, open My Links and create or edit the appropriate link.

If your current Azaz link editor provides a Parameters, UTM, or similar option, you can use the fields displayed there to configure supported parameters.

The exact options available can depend on the link and the current Azaz interface.

Using existing query parameters

A destination URL may already contain a query parameter.

For example:

https://example.com/product?id=123

In that case, additional parameters normally follow an ampersand (&) rather than starting another question mark.

For example:

https://example.com/product?id=123&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email

Be careful when manually editing URLs so you do not remove or break parameters that the destination website requires.

Use consistent UTM names

Consistent naming makes campaign reports easier to understand.

For example, avoid using several different names for the same source unless you intentionally want them reported separately.

Instead of mixing values such as:

  • Instagram
  • instagram
  • ig

Choose a naming convention and use it consistently, such as instagram.

Test your short link

After creating the link, open the Azaz short URL and confirm that it redirects to the correct destination.

If the destination URL contains UTM parameters, verify that the parameters are preserved as expected after the redirect.

Where do I see UTM campaign data?

UTM parameters are primarily intended for analytics software running on the destination website.

For example, if your website uses Google Analytics or another compatible analytics platform, that system may use UTM parameters when reporting traffic sources and campaigns.

The exact reports and attribution rules depend on the analytics platform you use.

Azaz Statistics and UTM analytics are different

You can view available Azaz link activity through Azaz Statistics.

These statistics should not necessarily be expected to match the analytics reported by the destination website.

Different systems may use different counting methods, filtering rules, privacy controls, bot detection, attribution methods, and reporting periods.

Do not put sensitive information in UTM parameters

Query parameters can be visible in URLs, browser history, analytics systems, server logs, and other places.

Do not place passwords, API keys, private tokens, personal information, or other sensitive data inside UTM parameters.

Use Azaz responsibly

Links created with UTM parameters are still subject to the Azaz Terms of Service.

UTM parameters must not be used to disguise phishing, malware, scams, or other prohibited destinations.
